SMICL Participates in GMA Stakeholder Engagement on Ratification of ILO Convention C185

Safety Marine International Company Limited (SMICL) proudly participated in the high-level stakeholder engagement organized by the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) on Monday, 30th March 2026, as part of intensified efforts to ratify the International Labour Organisation’s Seafarers’ Identity Documents Convention (ILO Convention C185).

The forum brought together key players in Ghana’s maritime industry, including the Attorney General’s Department, Ministry of Transport, seafarers’ unions, Marine Police, academia, and leading maritime organizations. Discussions focused on the urgent need to introduce the biometric Seafarers’ Identity Document (SID) — a modern, passport-like credential with digital fingerprints and photographs — to eliminate long-standing barriers faced by Ghanaian seafarers.

SMICL remains deeply committed to championing initiatives that protect and empower Ghanaian seafarers. Non-ratification of C185 has resulted in serious challenges, including restricted shore leave, difficult crew changes, and de facto sanctions — especially in major ports like Brazil, where Ghanaian seafarers are now required to obtain a cumbersome one-year visa.

By supporting the ratification of this convention, SMICL is helping to ensure that Ghanaian seafarers gain seamless international mobility, better working conditions, and improved mental well-being through regular access to shore leave after long voyages at sea. This move will also strengthen Ghana’s reputation and competitiveness in the global maritime industry.

As a forward-thinking maritime solutions provider, SMICL continues to play an active role in shaping policies that drive industry growth, enhance seafarer welfare, and create better opportunities for Ghanaian professionals. We believe that aligning with international standards such as ILO C185 is essential for positioning Ghana as a respected maritime nation.

SMICL extends its appreciation to the Ghana Maritime Authority under the leadership of Director-General Dr. Kamal-Deen Ali (Naval Capt. Rtd) for driving this important “resetting agenda.” We look forward to continued collaboration with all stakeholders to turn these efforts into reality.
